‘Thursday Activities’ – A New Co-Curricular Initiative

‘Thursday Activities’ — A New Co-Curricular Initiative

 The Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet

On 16th July 2026, The Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet, launched Thursday Activities, a new weekly initiative under the school’s broader Clubs and Co-Curricular Programme, designed exclusively for Middle School students of Grades 6 and 7. Rather than treating co-curricular learning as an occasional add-on, the initiative carves out a dedicated hour every week — from 8:10 a.m. to 9:10 a.m. on Thursdays — for students to step outside the regular timetable and pursue an interest of their own choosing, in depth and over time.

The programme launched with an expansive portfolio of 22 specialised clubs spanning the arts, sciences, sport and life skills, giving students at a formative age the freedom to explore where their aptitudes and curiosities genuinely lie. Each club is guided by a dedicated Teacher-in-Charge, supported by trained assistants and, in several domains, by renowned external experts brought in to ensure that the training students receive is not merely enthusiastic but genuinely skilled and professional.

Why the initiative matters

The idea behind Thursday Activities is simple but significant: no single child’s potential is fully captured by a classroom syllabus. By offering structured time for creative thinking, physical activity, aesthetic appreciation and analytical exploration, the initiative allows students to build life skills — confidence, discipline, collaboration and leadership — alongside their academic learning, rather than after it or instead of it.

Twenty-two clubs, five broad domains

The clubs on offer have been grouped into five broad domains, ensuring that whether a student’s inclination is towards the stage, the sciences, the sports field or the workshop table, there is a home for it:

Performing & Fine Arts: Art & Design, Calligraphy, Dance, Drama & Performing Arts, Music, Photography, Pottery, and Sculpture.

Literary & Oratory: Debate, Public Speaking (Little TEDs), and Handwriting.

Science & Financial Literacy: Financial Literacy & Investment, Math Club, Quantum Minds, and Science & Technology.

Leadership & Life Skills: Carpentry, Gourmet Guild, and Model United Nations (MUN).

Sports, Fitness & Martial Arts: Archery, Chess, Malkhamb, Martial Arts, and Silambam.

Early impact

In the weeks since its launch, the initiative has drawn enthusiastic and sustained participation across all 22 clubs. Teachers report that students are visibly gaining more than technical proficiency in their chosen pursuits — they are growing in confidence, learning to work as part of a team, and developing the self-discipline that comes from committing to a skill over time. For many students, Thursday mornings have quickly become one of the most eagerly anticipated hours of the school week.

Looking ahead

Encouraged by the response, the school plans to build on this foundation in the terms ahead — refining the existing domains based on student feedback and introducing new specialised clubs to further widen the scope of co-curricular learning at HPS Middle School. Thursday Activities is envisioned not as a one-time initiative but as an evolving, permanent feature of middle school life, one that grows richer each year alongside the students it serves.
