Alumni Talk Tanay Kasyap

Alumni Talk: Mr. Tanay Kasyap on Pattern Thinking, Economics and the Road to Research
The Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet

The Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet was delighted to welcome back Mr. KV Tanay Kasyap, an alumnus of the HPS Begumpet 2019 cohort, conducted on 18th August for an engaging session with Grade 10–12 CIE students that turned out to be one of the most thought-provoking of the term.

Tanay’s academic journey is a striking one. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Economics at London Business School, and holds an MSc in Econometrics and Mathematical Economics from the London School of Economics, where he studied under 2025 Nobel Laureate Philippe Aghion. He completed his BSc and MSc in Economics at the University of Warwick, graduating in the top 5% of his cohort, and has since been a Visiting Student and Research Fellow at Yale University, held research positions at University College London, and contributed to research with the UN’s International Labour Organization. His work spans Economic Theory, Labour Economics, International Trade and Industrial Organization, and has been published in the Journal of Development Economics, alongside a book chapter on time use.

True to that research instinct, Tanay didn’t deliver a conventional lecture — he opened a conversation. Working through pattern-based problems, he showed students how reasoning and analytical thinking often matter more than raw statistical data, moving fluidly between core ideas like demand and supply and microeconomics before drawing unexpected connections to geography, philosophy and communication. Students came away struck by how disciplines they’d considered separate were, in his telling, deeply intertwined.

The session closed with an extensive Q&A, where Tanay fielded questions on economics, higher education, research pathways, academic choices and career routes — including practical guidance on college applications to the UK and USA. His habit of answering a question with another question, nudging students to think further rather than simply handing them an answer, was especially appreciated.

Students left with far greater clarity on what a path through economics and research can look like, and with real first-hand insight into the journey from undergraduate study to advanced research — a session the school hopes to build on with future alumni visits
