Primary Years Programme (PYP) Curriculum – An Overview

Our Primary Years Programme (PYP) offers a rigorous, inquiry-based curriculum designed to nurture curious, confident, and compassionate learners. Rooted in the IB philosophy, the PYP develops students academically, socially, emotionally, and ethically through meaningful learning experiences.

The curriculum is organized around transdisciplinary units of inquiry that connect learning across subject areas, encouraging students to explore real-world issues, ask thoughtful questions, and take responsible action. Through a balanced emphasis on knowledge, skills, concepts, and attitudes, our learners develop strong foundations in language, mathematics, science, social studies, the arts, and personal, social and physical education.

Central to the PYP is the development of the IB Learner Profile, which guides students to become inquirers, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, and reflective individuals prepared to thrive in a global society.

Languages

At the Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet, our PYP curriculum celebrates multilingualism as a powerful tool for communication and global understanding. While English is the medium of instruction and daily communication, learners are encouraged to broaden their linguistic repertoire by choosing an additional language. We offer French, Spanish, Hindi, and Telugu, providing learners with meaningful opportunities to explore new cultures, strengthen their sense of identity, and develop confidence as effective communicators in an interconnected world.

Mathematics

At HPSB, we follow the Singapore Math approach to develop strong number sense, deep conceptual understanding, and confident problem solvers. This approach emphasizes mastery over memorization, encouraging learners to think critically, reason logically, and apply mathematics to real-life situations.

A key feature of Singapore Math is the CPA approach – Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract. Learners first explore concepts using concrete materials such as counters, blocks, and manipulatives. They then represent their thinking through pictorial models like drawings, bar models, and diagrams. Finally, they move to the abstract stage, using numbers, symbols, and algorithms with confidence and understanding.

Through this structured progression, learners at HPSB build a solid foundation in mathematics while developing clarity, confidence, and a love for learning.
