Field Visit to Food Corporation of India Godown

“A nation that cannot feed itself cannot survive.” The true meaning of these words was uncovered to us, Economics students of grade XI on the 23rd of August 2025, during our visit to the Food Corporation of India, Sanath Nagar on behalf of The Hyderabad Public School Begumpet as an educational experience to enrich our knowledge on the subject of government involvement in Ration production and distribution all over the country.

A total of 26 students departed from the bounds of the school on 23rd August at 12:00 p.m. to the godown of the Food Corporation of India. Upon arrival ,we were stunned to see railway tracks with train bogies and warehouses as big as industrial godowns, not knowing what we were about to experience. We were greeted by the administrative officials with warm smiles and a welcoming nature. After concluding our welcome and exchanging pleasantries, one of the Food Corporation officers escorted us to one of the many rice Godowns and passionately explained to us various things many of us never knew about rice. He delved into the layers of rice, taking depth into the various uses of the layers , and orating how the rice was processed. He narrated stories of the formation of the food corporation of India, emphasizing on its necessity , explaining how and why it acted and continues as a food bank for the entire country in times of despair , showing how it provides safety and employment to menial farmers with various schemes, and how it enables in providing basic rations to the underprivileged at subsidized rates, providing them with adequate nutrition.

Upon concluding his explanation of the uses and functions of the food corporation and narrating his stories and views on its rich history and its strong motto, he took us to the lab , where the hospitable staff offered us their seats selflessly and provided us with refreshments. The officer then continued explaining how the FCI samples and tests the quality of rice they are sending or receiving , upon which the stock is kept , discarded or returned. We got to witness the cutting edge modern technology the FCI uses to effectively test the purity of rice grains and grade their quality. Upon concluding our learning experience in the lab , we were taken to the weighing scale , where we were shown how rice is weighed and distributed when it is received and when it is being dispatched. He even let us all stand on it and showed us how the machine uniquely rounds off all weights to the nearest tens place. We then walked a little further, where we were shown how the rice is counted , stored and transported in train bogeys to various parts of the country for further distribution and consumption.

We were then taken back to our bus , and were ready to return to school , but not before taking a group photograph to keep a memory of our enthralling learning experience and our lovely visit and The Food Corporation office. Our minds were nourished with a plethora of information on the works of the FCI and were enlightened to see how much work really goes behind the rations the government provides. With enriched minds and content hearts, we set off from The FCI office and returned to school , with our scope of knowledge broadened, our perspectives brightened , our collective gratitude enumerated and our curiosity fulfilled. I would like to graciously thank everyone involved in the process of orchestrating the trip , right from the bus driver to the Vice Principal for making it possible and would encourage everyone to pay a visit whenever an opportunity arises.
